Since I didn't have my own Scent Wheel completed yet, I worked with the salt shaker with hot dog resetting Nad out of the room and using his nose to find it.  I had entered a post from a different computer and it got lost.

Placed the Scent Wheel (same as Lynn's - 24" with cans) on top of the ottoman.
Placed salt shaker with hot dogs on ground 6x

Placed the Scent Wheel on top of a Bosu Ball so the top of the can was more at Nad's nose level.

Nad did get confused at one point where I moved the wheel a little further.  He did get it after a few seconds - I can't say that it was from scenting and not from sight.

Introduction to the Scent Wheel (log)

Spent the day with Lynn and Lily and the scent wheel.  No hot dogs, so used Lily's log instead, inside the covered salt shaker.  Different house.  Different target scent.  And the shaker was closed instead of open.  Dropped the cue. (I noticed that the wheel itself has become Lily's cue to "play the game")  Began with the shaker in hand, to introduce the new scent.  Gradually moved it around the floor, always moving closer to the wheel.  Did not ask for duration.  Criteria: nose on shaker or can.

Session 6, the final session of the day, was not filmed.  10/10.  100%.  What was accomplished today?

• Nad consistently targeted the shaker containing log.  Was he targeting or sniffing?
• Nad found the shaker w/target scent on the wheel.  Was he targeting or sniffing?
• Nad found the shaker w/target scent in the can on the wheel.  Was he targeting or sniffing?
• Nad found the shaker w/target scent in the can on the wheel when the wheel turned very slightly to the left and again when it was turned very slightly to the right.  Once he targeted the empty can to the right and then found the target scent in the correct can.

These sessions were interspersed over a 4 hour period.  

Nose Work - Day 5

Today we started hiding the salt shaker with the hot dog inside a small baggie.  The top was on the 5 hole salt shaker.  I alternated sets between him and Samantha and the non-working dog was laying on their bed watching.  Nad had not eatean and the others had, so he was very food motivated,

SESSION 1:

Set 1:
I started the first couple holding it in my hand and cuing 'find it'.  Then put it on the floor.  Then started the same as the pieces of hot dog - having Nad sit and placing it 3', then 5', then moving it around and having him find it.  He quickly learned that the reward would come from me and not from the hot dog in the salt shaker.
Then re-setting Nad out of the room (he goes in his kennel around the corner), releasing him verbally and cueing 'find it'.
On this set I saw a lot of enthusiasm.  He did slow when I put it up on the ottoman, however, was very persistent and found it.

Set 2:
Still lots of drive.  Was really using his nose.

Set 3:
I saw a slowing down on this set.  We have only done 2 sets previously.  On 3 reps, he did stop for a few seconds and look at me.  I know this is speculation, however, i feel that he was starting to use his eyes a little more and his nose a little less.  He did however, complete them all.

Nose Work - Day 4

This morning we worked with hot dog cut into 6 pieces

SESSION 1:
Set 1:
6 Reps - 5/6 - reset once when hot dog piece was placed under a pillow on a bench.  I reset him and sent him in again with me standing halfway into the room (as it was at the far end) and he got it that time.

SESSION 2:

I alternated between Nad and Samantha using hot dog.  One would go out of the room (reset) while the other lay on their mat and watch).  I hid the hot dog up on furniture and under the large rug far corner as well as behind legs and under mats.
**This session I added using the clicker when they found the hot dog.  I clicked for both Nad and Samantha when they found where it was (my goal was that Nad would get extra exposure to the click marking the desired behavior).
I see Nad's stamina increasing as well as his enjoyment.

SESSION 3:
**changed to hot dog in small baggie in an open glass salt shaker.  Clicked for putting nose on it. Treated with gently tossing piece of hot dog.

Set 2: - started moving the salt shaker and adding the cue 'Find It'.
10 Reps - 9/10 (had to remind him that we were doing the salt shaker and not looking around for hidden hot dogs :)

Nose Work - Day 3

Today we only had one short session in the evening.

SESSION 1:
Set 1:
I set Nad out of the room and had my two other dogs in the room on their bed.  I used 4-5 pieces of kibble for the first session.  We did 6 reps.  I realized the fan was on after the 4th rep.  He eagerly sniffed around the room until he found the kibble.  On the 5th rep I put them close to an open door and possibly the outside smells carried in (in know, speculation).  The 6th rep I moved them in and he got them in a new place under a dog bed corner by the wall.  I am now seeing him search pretty much the whole room.

Set 2:
I read Sue's suggestion after my first set, so I used hot dog for the 2nd set.  He still sniffs in a fairly calm fashion, however, i did see him get 'hooked' into the scent where he'd sniff, turn around and then whip around back to the scent - way cool!  I only did 4 reps (one hot dog, 4 big pieces :)   Even though he enjoyed it, I could see more drive with using the hot dog.

Nose Work - Day 2

Scenting for fun – Day 2

Again we had a three sessions.

SESSION 1:

Nad would be reset out of the room while I hid kibble

Called in and asked to ‘Find It’

Placed kibble in different places in same room (now placing behind legs of furniture and under the edges of dog beds, etc.).

On the first session, Nad got stumped a couple times and I would happily reset him outside and move the kibble to an easier place and start over.

SESSIONS 2 & 3:

On the second and third session I used multiple pieces of kibble and also started taking turns with Samantha, my older English Shepherd who loves the game.  I had Nad lay on his bed in the room while Samantha went out.  I would plant the kibble for Samantha with Nad watching and then call Samantha in to ‘Find It’.  He watched as she sniffed all parts of the room to find the kibble.  He got treated on his bed when she found the kibble.  Then I had Samantha lay on the bed while Nad went out while I placed the kibble.  I noticed Nad’s enthusiasm go up as she watched him. 

Nose Work - Day 1

After taking some time off and getting some much needed input from Sue, Nad and I have started once again.  Sue had said that Nad was doing a 'trick' of putting his nose/chin on the scent pot.  We are starting over with kibble on the floor and starting to play hide-n-seek with the kibble like she did with Syn. 

We started with Nad sitting 5' away from me, I put a treat on the floor and told him to 'find it'.  I would reset him in between each repetition.   I then started moving the treat around so he would have to look for it.  Then I would put him in a sit or send him in his kennel in the other room and start over so he would have to come into the room and find the kibble.  From there we went to putting the kibble just out of sight in an easy place so he could start to use his nose.

I have noticed that Nad is a very literal dog.  If it is one place previously, he will go back there directly and start looking from there (even if it means going by where the treat is tucked away).  We will spend some time on this step bungeeing where the treat is.  I want to always make this fun for him.  He is still working on totally getting the concept.  Does he get it sometimes....yes.  Does he understand it.....no, not yet.

I even had him lay on his mat and watch one of my other dogs happily sniff around the room looking for a piece of hidden kibble.

We had 3 short sessions today.  

We will continue where we are tomorrow.

SESSION1:
Still treating from pot.
Set 1: 10 Reps - 1&2 Hold in front, 3-9 move towards ground, 10 held up again.  He did start to paw when it would go to the ground and then quickly change to putting his nose on it.

Set 2: 6 Reps -  6/6 - Treating from hand (still tossing treat) went back to holding pot in front.  I quit after 6 reps as he got distracted from something outside.

SESSION 2:
Set 1:  10 Reps - started with pot in front and again lowered to ground.  I sat on the ground with it. whenever he pawed first, i would raise it.

SESSION 2:
Had to move to bedroom as it was quiet.  One scent pot with kibble.  Treating with a higher value treat from hand.
Set 1: 10 Reps - 10/10 - you will see in the beginning that Nad is a little confused as to whether what is asked of him has to do with the clicker on the floor or the pot.  He quickly figures it out.

Set 2: - 10 Reps - 10/10

1 Scent Pot w/Kibble - Day 2

Goal:  for Nad to learn early on that he can move around the ottoman to get to the scent

SESSION 1:
one scent pot with kibble, moved the ottoman away from the table and me standing

Set 1: - 10 Reps - 9/10 I am counting the ones where he nosed them and put his chin on it as usually they were further away from the edge.  He did pick one up and hand it to me and that one I didn't count
Set 2: - 10 Reps - 10/10

SESSION 2:
This time I moved around the ottoman  and after I cued him once to go around (thanks Sue!) he got it.  I would alternate between tossing and feeding to the mouth if I saw him hesitate at all about going around to the pot.

Set 1:  7 Reps - 7/7  - He did well so I stopped

1 Scent Pot w/Kibble - Day 1

After talking with Lynn I started Nad at the very beginning with 1 scent pot with kibble in it this time.  The idea is to let him know that it is any scent, not just tea.  Also, I will be moving away from sitting next to him to try to avoid the issue that Lynn is currently having with Lily who is having difficulty going around the 24" scent wheel.

SESSION 1:

Set 1: 10 Reps - 10/10
Set 2: 10 Reps - 9/10 - Nad 'touched' (nose poked) it once

2 Scent Pots - Day 4

SESSION 1:

Set 1: - 10 Reps - 8/10 - on 4th rep, switched pots - no clue what was happening.  Went back to 1 pot in different places away from me (had been only keeping tea pot next to me).

Set 2:  6/10 - Was confused at the beginning.  Then I would put tea pot close to me and then gradually moved it so it was almost behind the empty pot.

Set 3:  8/10 - Put the tea pot away from me and the empty pot right up next to me.  The first two he would put his nose on the pot next to me and I waited till he tried the tea pot.  I kept it there so he would learn that it wasn't the position.

SESSION 2:

Moved to different ottoman on other side of table so I was sitting on the opposite side

Set 1: 10 Reps - 10/10 - one scent pot (with tea)

Set 2:  10 Reps - 8/10 - when there was an incorrect response, I would move the tea pot either way far away and only use one pot for a rep or two.  Then would put the empty pot right up next to me.  Then would reverse it.

Set 3:  10 Reps - 9/10 - repeat of Set 2

2 Scent Pots - Day 3

We haven't done anything for a few days as I was out of town.

SESSION 1:
 Counted one time when nose went to empty pot for a split second and then to the correct one.  I am counting this as I am not sure of the criteria for a 'correct' response. 
- How long does his nose have to be on the correct pot?
- If he touches the empty pot at all does that not count as correct even though he ends up on the correct pot?
I will check these out

Set 1:  9/10 - Rep 1 w/only 1 pot (with tea), threw treats on the same side as the correct pot
Set 2: 10/10 - throwing treats to middle and then past the empty pot

SESSION 2:
Set 1: 10/10 - He was really in the game so threw treats past empty pot then started moving the pots (still with the correct one closest to me)

2 Scent Pots - Day 2

SESSION !:

Set 1: - 10 Reps - 9/10
1st rep with only one + pot (with tea bag)
2-6 rep-perfect
7-put chin on empty pot (had been tossing treats to the side, he would have to go past the empty pot to get to the one with scent).  Waited 8 secs and he moved to the correct pot, c/t just as nose/chin went over pot (didn't wait for it to drop on it)
8-10 rep - one pot

Set 2: - 10 Reps 9/10
5th rep-put chiin on empty pot
removed 2nd pot

**next session will start with one pot for first few and then will make sure to toss treat so don't have to cross empty pot

If this happens again, try taking the 2nd pot away and then replacing it
and let Nad figure it out, even if you have to do it several times.....
counting each wrong touch as one of the reps.  Just for one session.
Then the next session go back to removing the 2nd pot if he makes a mistake.
 Then, when he has that figured out, keep doing the same thing
but "bungee" where you are tossing the treats, so that eventually he is able to pass by the empty pot
to get to the scented pot.

2 Scent Pots: Day 1

I introduced a second (empty) scent pot today.  I placed the pot with the tea bag right next to me as i had done previously.  I did not rotate the pots at all.

SESSION 1:
Set 1: 10 Reps - rep 1-3 were perfect. he would sbriefly sniff the empty pot and then place his chin on the correct one.  On the 4th Rep, he placed his chin on the empty pot  then on the correct one.  on the 5th Rep he got really confused and placed his chin on the on the empty post for quite a while so I pulled it out and replaced them with the + pot (with tea bag) close to me and the - pot (without the teabag) much further away.

Set 2:  10 Reps - To help him get that I wanted him to target the pot next to me (the same one he had been clicked for previously), on three reps I clicked when his nose was right next to the pot (as opposed to his chin being on it).  He did start to offer me some other shaping behavior (chin on my foot) and that stopped as soon as I went back to clicking for his chin on the pot.

SESSION 2:
This session I went from 1 scent pot to two (as per my conversation with Lynn).
Nad was really hungry (it was 2 hours past his usual dinner time, and I tossed the chicken treats further away again)

Set 1: 10 Reps - 8/10 - with making it easier midway
Started with 1 pot for the first 3 reps. Got tremendous enthusiasm.  Added 2nd pot for 4th rep, again with no hesitation putting his chin on the correct pot.  I then randomly went from 1 to 2 pots.

Set 2: -  10 Reps -  1/10
This time I started with 1 pot for the 2 reps.  Then added the 2nd pot (still further away) and got wonderful enthusiasm and accuracy.

Scent Pot: Day 11

In wanting to get more enthusiasm for the pots, I started tossing the treat further instead of just gently tossing it to the ground by Nad.  I did see a good pick up as the speed increased between reps.

Set 1:  10 Reps - 10/10

SESSION 3:
I was going to only do 2 sets today and when I got home at 11:00 this evening he seemed ready and everyone else was asleep.  This was the best one yet and I definitely left him wanting more.

Scent Pot: Day 10

**I will do one more day without any change as I really want this behavior totally solid before adding another pot.

Scent Pot: Day 9

I sat on the ottoman with the pot to make it easier for Nad.  We used chicken as the treat as he had eaten a while before both sessions today.  I definitely see more interest using the chicken.

Once again, I started with a fresh hydrated tea bag in the morning.

SESSION1:
Set 1:  10 Reps - I bungeed my hand from being on the pot to being off the pot next to me - 10/10

Set 2:  10 Reps - same as previous set - 10/10


SESSION 2:  
This time I sat on the table right next to the ottoman.  I pulled the ottoman over so they were touching.

Set 1:  10 Reps - no hand on pot - got distracted when Samantha came into the room (she pushed her way through the gate) - 9/10  *saw great focus and enthusiasm.

Set 2:  10 Reps - changed direction of the pot (it is a rectangular container).  He was very focused and one time tried to put his teeth on the lid and then corrected himself.  I am seeing very strong chin placements with no hesitation.

Scent Pot: Day 8 (Intro to the pot being on a surface)

Before I started today I thought about what surface I would use.  My first thought was to use the coffee table as it is just at nose height.  That thought quickly went away as I didn't in any way want to encourage his nose hanging out on the table!

I used a large upholstered ottoman (which always has a blanket on it as we put our feet on it and the dogs are allowed on it).  I moved it next to the coffee table so I could sit on the table and still be next to him.

SESSION 1:
I started with a few reps of me holding the pot in my hand as I had done previously to remind him of what we were doing.

Set 1:  10 Reps - I had my hand on the pot when it was on the ottoman and moved it off once and he got confused so I put it back on.  10/10

Set 2:  10 Reps - 10/10

SESSION 2:
Once again I did a few reps of me holding the pot to remind him again

Set 1:  10 Reps - 10/10

Set 2:  10 Reps - 10/10 - I jackpotted once in the middle to keep his interest as he was getting a little distracted by sounds

Scent Pot: Day 7

Working again with hydrated Earl Grey tea (using distilled water).

Sometimes I am 'bungeeing' station times.  The longest duration I've asked for is 20 secs, the shortest 1 sec.

SESSION 3:

Set 2:  10 Reps - 10/10  - one rep he was distracted by a noise, moved his chin off and came back to it within 2 secs.

Scent Pot: Day 6

Time to do some major rethinking.
I now know that Nad has no idea at all what I am asking for.

To make it easier for him, this morning I made the holes bigger and got a new hydrated tea bag.

SESSION 1:

I let him smell the tea bag and presented it open to him 5 times with a 'yes' and treat (y/t)

Then presented 2 pots with lids off and he would randomly pick the empty pot :/
I was trying to make sure that position wasn't a cue

Then put the lid on and presented  the one pot with the tea 5 times with a y/t

When I presented 2 pots, he was very random, so I stopped.

After talking with Lynn, I am going back to 1 scent pot with the tea for a while.

Scent Pot: Day 5 (intro Tea Bag)

I wet an Earl Grey tea bag by opening the packet and adding distilled water into it and letting is soak for a few seconds then put in into an open baggie in the container I had originally had cut up log in.  The past few days I had used it empty.

I decided to go straight with the tea bag as I thought that starting with food and then changing may be confusing as food has such an instinct to go to.

**I was sitting and presenting the pots at nose level.  When there was one pot, it was in front of him, then moving to different positions on either side.  When I presented 2 pots, they were at nose level in front and on either side of his nose.  

SESSION 1:

Set 1:  10 reps - presented only the one scent pot with the tea bag

Set 2:  10 reps presented only the one scent pot with the tea bag

Set 3:  4 reps with only the one scent pot with the tea bag
           4 reps added addition empty scent pot - got 3 in a row correct / 1 incorrect
           opened up the pot so he could smell the tea
           4 reps with only the one scent pot with the tea bag

I think it was a fluke that he got the scent pot with the tea bag the first 3 times that 2 were presented.
I have not asked him to use his nose on anything previously.  He doesn't have any concept that smelling is what I'm asking for at this point.
    
   
SESSION 2:

*Started by opening the scent pot with the tea and letting him smell it.

Set 1:  10 reps - first 5 presented one pot; 2nd 5 presented two pots - same position - 9/10 correct

Set 2:  10 reps - 2 pots; first 5 in same position; 2nd 5 mixed position - 3/5 correct in mixed position

Set 3:  10 reps -2 pots mixed.  4 correct/1 wrong/3 correct/ 1 wrong 1 correct

Set 4:  12 reps - 2 pots mixed - 10 correct responses.

On the last set I thought he was starting to get it.  We'll see, I still think he's trying to figure out exactly what I am asking for.


SESSION 3:

*used fresh hydrated tea bag

Set 1:  10 reps- on 3rd rep I heard him sniff the pots.  Missed a couple. After 5th, let him sniff the tea. 7/10 correct>

Set 2:  10 reps - Got 3 correct from first 5 so went back to single for the remaining 5

Set3:  10 reps - 7/10  correct.  At this point making sure that the position I am holding them isn't a cue

Set4:  10 reps - Missed 4 in the middle and noticed that his ear was turned towards the door.  6/10 correct.
